Streams of hate and untruth? Using online comments, posts and tweets to investigate attitudes and the quality of political debates (HATE)

Type: National Project

Duration: from 2018 Oct 01 to 2021 Sep 30

Financed by: Feder/OE

Prime Contractor: Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (University)

Hundreds of millions of comments, posts and tweets are left everyday by people all over the world, but many of them are polarized and uncivil, clearly stretching freedom of speech and often putting democratic political debate into question. The project addresses this pressing political and social issue and the impact of technology on society in different countries, through a comparative and innovative multi-methods and interdisciplinary approach. The research team includes national and international researchers from the fields of political science, social psychology, information and computer science, media studies, and sociology based at the ICS-UL and at the INESC-ID, two excellent research institutions and FCT Associate Laboratories.
