Improving University Courses through Gamification (GameCourse)

Type: National Project

Duration: from 2018 Oct 01 to 2021 Sep 30

Financed by: FCT

Prime Contractor: INESC-ID (Other)

Teaching is now a mass process: rooms full of students who are taught the same subjects in the same way; an experience, in general, monolithic and uniform, without concern for cognitive learning styles. Even in new approaches such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) the standard is still the standardisation. Gamification has shown promising in changing this situation. By presenting course content to students as if it were a game, they can increase their involvement and motivation. However, the gamification mechanisms have also been applied uniformly. Here lies the open challenge addressed by this project: How to improve student learning and involvement through (semi-)automatic adaptation and refinement of gaming experiences and learning taking into account their profiles, revealed through their continued interaction with a gamified course and their reactions to pre-existing elements and game mechanics? We intend to approach the learning style of each student; needs and objectives to improve results and motivation. We will create ways of adapting the experiment (semi-)automatically in real time.
